Heathers

Veronica Sawyer is a smart, watchful student who gets pulled into the orbit of the three most powerful girls at her school, all named Heather, trading her sense of self for a taste of popularity she is not sure she actually wants. When a mysterious, magnetic new student named JD takes an interest in her, Veronica finds herself drawn to his sharp wit and outsider's disdain for the school's social order, unaware of how far his resentment runs or where his plans for the Heathers are headed.

Based on the 1988 cult film, the musical has music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy and takes the film's pitch-black high school satire and sets it to a driving, guitar-forward pop-rock score. It premiered off-Broadway in 2014 and has since developed a devoted following, especially among younger audiences drawn to its unflinching, comic take on cruelty and belonging in high school.

The score is sharp, fast, and unmistakably rock-influenced, built for a story that moves quickly between comedy and something much darker. "Beautiful" opens with Veronica's outsider view of her school's social order, "Candy Store" introduces the Heathers with venomous charisma, and "Seventeen" gives Veronica a quieter, more vulnerable moment amid the chaos. "Dead Girl Walking" leans hard into the show's blackest comedy. This is not a family show: the satire is pointed and the content is genuinely heavy, so it suits older teens and adults who appreciate dark comedy that does not soften its edges.
