Life

Laurence O'Keefe is an American composer and lyricist who studied at Ivy League universities before beginning a career writing musicals off-Broadway and regionally in New York in the 1990s. His first major success was Bat Boy: The Musical, written with book writers Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, which won several off-Broadway awards after opening in 2001.

O'Keefe's biggest commercial hit came with Legally Blonde: The Musical, written with lyricist and composer Nell Benjamin and based on the 2001 film, which opened on Broadway in 2007 and has since become a staple of school and regional theater. He later wrote Heathers: The Musical with Kevin Murphy, based on the 1988 cult film, which built a strong following off-Broadway and internationally without a full Broadway run.

O'Keefe continues to write for the stage, often drawn to unconventional or cult source material, and his shows remain popular with theaters looking for something sharper or stranger than a traditional book musical.
