Roundabout Theatre Company

Roundabout is one of New York's largest nonprofit theater companies, running three Broadway houses, the Todd Haimes Theatre and Studio 54 among them, plus the smaller off-Broadway Laura Pels Theatre. That range means a Roundabout show can be a starry revival of a classic play or musical in a full-size Broadway house, or a newer play in a more intimate room. The company built its identity on well-crafted revivals and has a large subscriber base, so productions tend toward accessible, actor-driven staging rather than the experimental.

Roundabout Theatre Company was founded in 1965 in a converted supermarket basement in Chelsea, with a mission to bring classic plays to New York audiences at affordable, subscription prices. The company struggled financially through its early years and came close to collapse before a major reorganization in the early 1980s.

Todd Haimes took over as artistic director in 1983 and spent the next four decades rebuilding the company, moving it out of its original basement space and into a series of Broadway and off-Broadway houses, including Studio 54 and the Laura Pels Theatre. Under Haimes, Roundabout broadened from strict classic revivals into a wider mix of established and contemporary plays and musicals, and won multiple Tony Awards for best revival along the way, growing into one of the largest nonprofit theaters in the country.

Haimes led Roundabout until his death in 2023. Its Broadway house, formerly known by a corporate name, was renamed the Todd Haimes Theatre in his honor. The company continues to produce on Broadway and off, running a subscription-driven mix of revivals and new work across its venues.
