New World Stages

New World Stages opened in 2004 inside a building on West 50th Street in Manhattan that had previously operated as a multiplex movie theater. Developers reconfigured the space into several separate off-Broadway stages of varying sizes, built for commercial open-ended runs rather than a single company's repertory season.

Since opening, the complex has hosted a steady lineup of long-running commercial shows and transfers, including extended runs of popular musicals, family-friendly entertainment and immersive productions, with individual stages often booked by different producers at the same time. Its design, with shared public spaces serving multiple auditoriums, brought a modern, multiplex-style theatergoing experience to off-Broadway that had not existed there before.

New World Stages remains a hub for commercial off-Broadway runs, valued by producers for its flexible, well-equipped stages in a central Manhattan location, and by audiences for the amenities, comfort and central Theater District location that its multiplex-style design offers over older, smaller off-Broadway houses scattered around the city. Because several of its stages can run different shows at once, a single visit to the building can put a family show, a play and a big commercial musical all within a short walk of each other under one address.
