The story

The Rainbow Fish is a gentle play for young audiences about a beautiful fish whose silver scales shimmer in the ocean. The other fish admire him, but he keeps to himself, and when they ask him to share something he treasures, he has a choice to make about friendship and generosity. The sea creatures around him are brought to life on stage by the cast.

The play is adapted by Austin Zumbro from Marcus Pfister's much-loved picture book, which first came out in the early 1990s. This version is licensed through Pioneer Drama Service, which supplies plays to schools and community theaters, so you will often see it performed by young actors and local companies.

What to look for

This is a story told through simple, clear scenes, so look for the colorful costumes and set pieces that make an underwater world, and for the moments when the fish gather and talk. The tone is warm and kind, with a lesson about sharing that children can follow easily. It suits preschoolers and early elementary kids, and it is a good first trip to the theater for families with little ones.
