Finding Neverland

J.M. Barrie is a successful playwright with a stalled marriage and a case of writer's block his producer is losing patience with, until a chance meeting in a London park with a widow, Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, and her four young sons pulls him out of his rut. Drawn into the boys' elaborate games of pirates, fairies, and flight, Barrie begins to see the outline of a story taking shape, even as his unconventional friendship with the family draws raised eyebrows from society and skepticism from the theater world that expects something more serious from him.

As Barrie's imagination and the family's world merge, the play he starts to write, about a boy who refuses to grow up, becomes something neither he nor his producer expected. The musical, with music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy and a book by James Graham, is based on the 2004 film of the same name and premiered in 2015, going on to a Broadway run led by Matthew Morrison.

The score moves between playful, childlike wonder and genuine emotional weight, matching a story about imagination growing out of real hardship. "Believe" is the show's soaring central anthem about holding on to wonder, while "Play" captures the boys pulling Barrie into their games with infectious energy.
