Elf

Buddy has been raised as an elf at the North Pole ever since he crawled into Santa's sack as a baby, but as an adult elf towering over everyone in the workshop, he finally learns he is actually human. Determined to meet his birth father, a workaholic New York children's book publisher named Walter Hobbs who does not know Buddy exists, Buddy sets off for the city in full elf costume, utterly unprepared for a place with no candy canes, revolving doors as playgrounds, or a shared belief in Christmas magic.

Walter's reaction to a grown man claiming to be his son and an elf is not exactly warm, and Buddy's relentless cheer soon collides with a city, and a family, that has stopped believing in much of anything. The musical, with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin, is based on the beloved 2003 film and opened on Broadway in 2010, quickly becoming a holiday-season staple for professional and community theaters alike.

The score is bright and brassy, built for a hero who greets the world at top volume. "Happy All the Time" introduces Buddy's relentless good cheer, and the comic "Sparklejollytwinklejingley" turns his elf vocabulary into a showstopper as he navigates a department store job. Later, "A Christmas Song" and the finale lean into the show's sincere message about family and belief, balancing the jokes with real warmth.
