American writer Cliff Bradshaw arrives in Berlin in the early 1930s and takes a room in a boarding house, drawn into the seedy, glamorous world of the Kit Kat Klub, presided over by an unsettling, knowing Emcee. There he falls for Sally Bowles, a British cabaret singer chasing fame and pleasure with little thought for tomorrow, and the two begin a whirlwind relationship even as Cliff senses the city's carefree nightlife concealing something darker taking hold outside the club's doors. A parallel romance between Cliff's landlady and a Jewish shopkeeper faces growing threats as Nazi influence spreads through the neighborhood.

Cabaret has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff, based on John Van Druten's play and Christopher Isherwood's stories. It opened on Broadway in 1966 and has been revived repeatedly, including major reworkings in 1998 and 2024, each shaping the show's tone and staging differently.

The Emcee's numbers, delivered directly to the audience, frame the whole evening as a distorted cabaret performance commenting on the story's darker turns. Sally's songs showcase her determined, brittle optimism even as her circumstances worsen. The title song closes Act One on a defiantly bright note that contrasts sharply with the growing menace outside the club. Kander and Ebb's score mixes vaudeville-style pastiche with genuine emotional ballads, and different productions stage the Emcee and club numbers quite differently. It suits mature audiences interested in political history told through cabaret-style theatricality.
