Luke Sheppard

Luke Sheppard is a British theater director based in London, best known for staging the musical & Juliet, which transferred from the West End to Broadway. He also directed the West End premiere of In the Heights and the new musical Paddington, both multiple Olivier Award winners, and trained at the University of Bristol before starting out at Salisbury Playhouse.

Sheppard is known for taking familiar or unexpected source material, a jukebox premise, a beloved children's book, a hit film, and finding a fresh theatrical shape for it, often with a strong pop sensibility and a lot of energy. His musicals tend to move fast, mixing big ensemble numbers with a playful sense of humor, while still landing emotional moments cleanly. Expect polished, high-energy stagings built for a broad audience, with movement and design used to keep a familiar story feeling surprising.

Sheppard studied drama at the University of Bristol and received the inaugural Noël Coward Trainee Director Award at Salisbury Playhouse before training on the National Theatre Directors Course. He directed the West End premiere of & Juliet, which won six WhatsOnStage Awards and three Olivier Awards before transferring to Broadway in 2022, and his West End staging of In the Heights also won three Olivier Awards. He later directed the new musical Paddington, which won seven Olivier Awards including Best Director.
